Dennis Evans – Percy’s Youngest Son Growing Up and as a Young Man in Australia

Dennis (full name Ronald Dennis Evans) was born in 1925. He is the only surviving member of his generation of Evans’s, and for anyone who doesn’t already know, living in Adelaide, South Australia.

Dennis said: “Dennis with Carol (R) and her friend Wendy (L) on a footbridge over the River Torrens in Adelaide.”
Dennis said: “When I turned 18 I joined the RAAF and had initial training as a pilot but failed in an early flying test.

I was then switched to Navigator training which I completed in December 1944 graduating as a Flight Sergeant Navigator.

I married Jeannette in January 1945. Because the war was proceeding ‘satisfactorily’ the RAAF didn’t really know what to do with me and others like me. A half-hearted attempt was made to form some crews for some Liberator bombers but nothing eventuated.

After a couple of months, I was sent to a Navigation refresher course during which I developed a eustachian tube problem which eventually had me permanently grounded.

Soon after this, the war ended and I left the air force ASAP.”
